The underground design for Beach Boulevard from south of Ball Road to north of Lincoln has been completed, and is currently under review by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). This project is an integral part of the Beach Boulevard Specific Plan which outlines the improvements to the Beach Boulevard corridor that also include roadway and property improvements, signage, and upgraded street lighting. The undergrounding is currently being coordinated with Southern California Edison (SCE) and affected telecommunication companies. Beach Boulevard is classified as a state highway, and therefore, Caltrans is requiring APU to go through a more detailed and extensive permit review process versus a typical encroachment permit. Construction is tentatively planned to start in late Summer 2022 for completion in 2024 pending Caltrans’ permit approval.
